A Winter Baptism

This post is much overdue, but I’m happy to share a bit of Emerson’s baptism with you! Perhaps, the wintry theme will bring a bit of relief in the midst of this hot, summer season. 🙂

Long before she was born, the discussion surrounding Emerson’s baptism was a priority. I was hoping to get her baptized before I returned to work back in August, however, our church was experiencing a pastoral transition. We explored what our options were, hoping to avoid having a pastor baptize her whom we didn’t know well. Shortly after she was born, our new pastor accepted his call to our church, so we decided to wait until after he was installed.

After reviewing dates that would work for our families, and being mindful of travel plans surrounding the holidays, we ultimately decided to get Emerson baptized on January 8th, happening to be the day our church recognized the baptism of Jesus. It was the sweetest day, one that I’m sure Jody and I will cherish for the rest of our lives.

We were joined by Emerson’s grandparents, aunt and uncle, great-grandparents, and dear friends. After words were shared encouraging her faith, Jody helped baptize her, assisting our pastor in placing the holy water on her head. It was such a special moment!

This picture is extra special to me. Our family was invited to stand surrounding us during her baptism, and my grandfather didn’t hesitate to join. He sadly passed away just two months later, so I cherish this picture of him witnessing this pivotal moment in his great-granddaughter’s life.

Following the service, we invited our family and friends to our home for a celebratory luncheon. Inspired by Emerson’s love of trees and my desire to leave the Christmas decor up a little longer, I played up the wintry theme in our decor and tablescape. Our dining table, where we were to have the food, was lined with faux frosted garland, weaving around white ceramic houses. Our Christmas tree was still decorated and lit nearby and garland wrapped our banisters. As a backdrop, I hung pictures of Emerson from the curtain rods behind the table and placed a few of my favorites in gold frames along the centerpiece. The focal point of the table was her cake, an Almond Amaretto Smith Island cake.

I wanted the day to be stress-free so I ordered a platter of sandwiches and fruit from a local restaurant that we picked up on the way back. We also enjoyed pasta salad, meatballs, and crab dip made by my grandmother. I also had little bite-sized quiches in the freezer ready to pop in the oven, but completely forgot! I guess I can attribute that to just coming out of the post-holiday newborn haze.

Nonetheless, it was the perfect day to celebrate Emerson’s salvation with family! Jody and I are eager to the same Bible stories with her that we grew up learning.

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

– Matthew 28:18-19
